November 2001
We fought a Spanish Civil War wargame using Command Decision 3rd Edition rules (with dark-green 2nd Edition order chits) and 20mm miniatures.
This scenario was called Take Ground, Compadre, 1937. It was not a historical scenario, but rather was designed to bring a variety of SCW units into a sort of free-for-all battle, where units arrived at random times and at random entry points. I don't recall how the battle turned out, but I think it was suitably chaotic.
You'll note that we played on a sand table. This was located in the garage of Don Melius, who hosted wargames at his place from time to time. He refused to take part, apparently wary of getting too emotionally involved in any battle to the point where he might throw his dice and lose his cool. But he was a gracious host.
Scroll down past the photos to see rules of list of forces for this battle.
Spanish Civil War Game:
Take Ground, Compadre, 1937
Republican Units: (roll 1-2 d10 each for activation each turn; roll random entry point)

2) Internationals: British Battalion (Experienced: 9)
3) Internationals: Lincoln Battalion (Regular: 8)
4) Internationals: Spanish Battalion (Regular: 7)
5) PCE (Communist) militia battalion (motorized) + 75 gun battery + armored truck (Green: 1d6+4)
6) Riot Corps Battalion (Assault Guard): 2 coys Assaultos + MMG + armored car (Veteran: 9)
7) Tank Battalion: 2 x T-26/33 (Regular: 8), 1 x Schneider (Green: 7)
8) 1 flight of aircraft (R-5) (Experienced, morale 9)
Nationalist Units: (roll 1-2 d10 each for activation each turn; roll random entry point)
1) Nationalist HQ (Regular: 8)
2) Cavalry Regiment (Regular: 8)
3) Carlist militia battalion (Experienced: 9)
4) Guardia Civil detachment: 2 coys + armored car (Experienced: 8)
5) Spanish Foreign Legion battalion (Veteran: 9)
6) Horse artillery battalion (77mm) (Regular: 8)
7) Tank regiment: 3 x FT-17 (Regular: 8)
Secret Referee Rule: Republican Airstrike
When the aircraft appears, the Republican overall commander picks 3 target points for the mission; the referee then picks one of these points randomly, and makes a normal deviation roll for the actual strike point of the mission.
The mission is general support, and the target unit of the mission is chosen according the priorities in rule 15.214 (page 10 of the Advanced Rules booklet).
So it is possible that the aircraft may spot friendly troops near the derived target point and attack them.
Secret Referee Rule: POUM vs. PCE
These two factions are bitter rivals; treat the opposing faction as enemy. Thus, if stands of these factions are within 5” of each other and are eligible to fire, they must attack the rival militia stands if they are closer than any Nationalist stands.
Secret Referee Rule: Republican Propaganda Truck
At the start of the morale phase, before morale has been checked, the player with the propaganda truck may roll for each unit within 5” of the truck.
The effect of the roll is instantaneous, and affects the whole unit, not just single companies:
Roll 1d10: 1 = Nationalist target unit gets -1 morale chit; Republican loses a -1 morale chit.
2 = Nationalist target unit gets -1 morale chit
9 = Nationalist target unit loses a -1 morale chit
10 = Nationalist target unit loses a -1 morale chit and gets an extra order chit to place before its morale check.
Note: Carlist militia and Foreign Legion will never have morale reduced by the truck.
Also, if a unit’s morale is reduced to -4 by the propaganda truck, that unit switches to the Republican side and loses two -1 morale chits.
Weather: Clear (visibility = 60” or more).
Initial Forces:
Dry Creek Bed: Republican POUM militia battalion + 65mm gun (Green: 1d6+4)
